The Importance of Costuming in Clowning
Generally a clown costume consists of large clothing in eye-catching colors. The modern clown, with funny clothes, colorful wigs, and a red nose, was created by Tom Belling senior, who worked for Circus Renz in Vienna, Austria. But there are many different ways to pull off costuming in clowning.
Cirque du Soleil is known far and wide for their intriquite designs. The costume designers put extra work into making sure the performers look like they truly fit in the performance. With bright colors, various materials and even moving parts, the Cirque du Soleil actors embody the classic clown whimsy while also sporting functionally, as intense acrobatics are a key part of their act.
Clowncore enthusists have changed the meaning of costuming as of late. Thrifting and upcycling has swept through the community, allowing individuals to make costumes with little sewing or costume design experience. A high empasis on contrasting designs, patterns and colors in clothing has be encouraged. The community has also seen recent influence from the Decora Kei and kawaiicore fashion trends.
